The principal in his own Asheville, N.C. architectural firm, Bruce Johnson launched Bruce Johnson-Architecture in 1990, after 10 years with a Raleigh design group. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he received his Masters of Architecture from North Carolina State and today specializes in environmentally sensitive custom residences, ranging from small, rustic cabins to large, timber-frame country estates. He has recently completed projects in Asheville, Lake James, and Lake Toxaway, N.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Ligonier, Pa.; and Gonaives, Haiti.
His work has earned him the U.S. Department of Energy’s Award for Energy Innovation and the Australian Masonry Association’s Award for Design Excellence. He has conducted solar seminars and presented technical papers throughout the U. S. and Europe. His designs have been published in international magazines, filmed for public television, and used by MGM in a feature movie.
