Case Study Part II: How We Designed Uur Mountain Home
From the Fall 2007 Issue

By Norma Lugar

For Len and JoAnne Boone, the hunt for a perfect mountain home started at ground level: the perfect place. A spot for limited work and plenty of fun, golf and family time. The choice: Linville Ridge, N.C. where they discovered a spacious lot overlooking the golf course and the sort of active country club lifestyle they enjoy. With that decision done, we now look at the next step: creating a beautiful, multi-use plan.

If anybody knows about the importance of home design, it’s Len and JoAnne Boone.

For more than three decades, the Roanoke, Va. couple has created some of the most desirable communities in both their hometown and metropolitan Richmond. And while the Boones recognize the pulling power of exterior beauty, it’s their understanding of the way people want to live in their homes that has made the Boones hugely successful.

It’s no wonder, then, that when it came to putting together the design of their own mountain home, the result was a dual-personality plan: something completely practical for two people but with the option of generous, separate space when company comes.

“The strongest feature of the house,” says JoAnne, “is that a couple can live entirely on the main level, but the upstairs is there for guests and children.”
